Sol Plaatjie Secondary school strikes Sun Rise View to represent NW at the national Road Safety Debate Making reasons beyond doubt that community outreach approach is more effective than media approach, directly took the Sol Plaatjie Secondary School to position one beating the Sun Rise High School during the 2019 Road Safety Debate Competition held at Orion Hotel in Rustenburg. A Mahikeng based secondary school will represent the Province for the second time ever since the beginning of this competition. The Sol Plaatjie will represent the Province in the Urban Category, while the Sun Rise View will be representing on the Rural Category with the Christiana School for the Blind will represent on the Disability Category. The National Road Safety Debate Competition will be held in the Free State Province. Other participating school for this year’s Provincial Road Safety Debate were, PH Moeketsi Agric High School, Matlosana Secondary School. In his address to the participants and all stakeholders in attendance, Community Safety and Transport Management MEC, Sello Lehari emphasised the importance of obeying road rules by all road users in inclusive of pedestrians. Lehari said the road safety debate competition is a weapon shaped for the war to save lives on the roads of the Province and the country at large. “We have no doubt that this endeavour will bear positive results. We have never failed in the past and we reiterate that we shall not fail going forward. The fight against road crashes and fatalities must go on until it is won,” said MEC Lehari who The Department of Education and Sport Development representative, Dr Daniel More appreciated the initiative on road safety debate emphasising that it builds learners thinking capacity, making them critical thinkers. Dr More pleaded with the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management to sustain the initiative. This debate competition is designed to increase road safety awareness by young people, converting them to be road safety ambassadors. The programme is implemented by the department in conjunction with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and Department of Basic Education targeting high school learners. The competition unfolds in two approaches, firstly being to firstly educate a smaller group of learners, and secondly to empower larger groups of learners and communities via these peer educators who will impart the necessary road safety information that will save lives and avert injuries through sanctioning learners with practical research skills and enhancing their presentation skills, and promoting team work by means of participatory education techniques.
